Meet Dean Rowen

Dean RowenDr. Randall C. Rowen is the Campus Dean of the South Carolina College of Pharmacy, USC campus. Dean Rowen received his Doctor of Pharmacy from Northeastern University College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions in Boston, and was Chief Resident during his Clinical Pharmacy Residency with the University of Illinois Health Sciences Center, College of Pharmacy, Chicago. Dean Rowen received his Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy, graduating with Honors, from Northeastern University College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions in Boston. Dean Rowen completed his pre-pharmacy studies at the University of San Francisco.

For 23 years, Dean Rowen has been faculty with the USC College of Pharmacy. Starting as a Clinical Assistant Professor he focused on clinical practice, teaching, and clinical research. Currently, Dean Rowen is a Clinical Associate Professor, University of South Carolina, College of Pharmacy, and an Associate Professor, Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston, South Carolina. Dean Rowen serves as Adjunct Clinical Associate Professor, Division of Geriatrics, Department of Medicine, University of South Carolina, School of Medicine, in Columbia. Dean Rowen has also taught at the Department of Pharmacy Practice, University of Illinois Health Sciences Center, College of Pharmacy, Chicago, Illinois; the Department of Pharmacy Practice, Northeastern University, College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Professions, Boston, Massachusetts; and at the New Hampshire Vocational Technical College, Concord, New Hampshire.

Dean Rowen is a Clinical Pharmacist by training and his area of specialization is Geriatrics. From 1994 to 1998 Dean Rowen served as Director of Pharmacy Services at the James F. Byrnes Center for Geriatric Medicine, Education, and Research and the William S. Hall Psychiatric Institute, South Carolina Department of Mental Health. Dean Rowen has also served as a Clinical Pharmacist in Geriatric Medicine, WJB Dorn Veterans Administration Hospital in Columbia, and was Consultant and Owner, Pharmacare, Irmo, South Carolina. Dean Rowen’s experience as a practicing pharmacist included serving as Clinical Pharmacist in Internal Medicine, Richland Memorial Hospital, Columbia; Hospital Pharmacist, Department of Pharmacy, New Hampshire Hospital, Concord, New Hampshire; Pharmacy Manager and Pharmacist, Rite Aid Corporation, Wilmington, Delaware; and Pharmacy Technician, Inman Square Pharmacy, Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Professionally, Dean Rowen is a member of the South Carolina Geriatrics Society and on its Board of Directors 2006-2008; the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, and serves on the Administrative House of Delegates; the American College of Clinical Pharmacy; American Geriatrics Society, Clinical Practice Committee 2006-2009; American Society of Health-System Pharmacists; South Carolina Society of Health-System Pharmacists; and South Carolina Pharmacy Association.

Dean Rowen has received many honors and awards, including membership in Phi Lambda Sigma, Pharmacy Leadership Society, Zeta Chapter; Upjohn Pharmacy Research Award, South Carolina Society of Hospital Pharmacists; Research Certificate of Scientific Merit, Southern Medical Society Annual Meeting; and Rho Chi Honor Society, Beta Tau Chapter, Northeastern University. Dean Rowen has made presentations throughout the country to organizations including the American Psychiatric Association; California Pharmaceutical Association; American Academy of Family Practitioners; Southern Medical Society; American College of Physicians; and the Research Society on Alcoholism. Dean Rowen has been published in Pharmacotherapy, Hospital Therapy, the American Journal of Hypertension, the Journal of Clinical Geropsychology; and many others.
