Introduction
Joint PharmD/MBA programs are currently offered at 16 colleges of pharmacy in the United States and are under development at many others, helping to meet the need for pharmacists who understand general business principles as well as direct patient care activities. The joint degree is considered highly desirable for persons seeking careers in hospitals and health systems, the pharmaceutical industry, pharmacy benefit management organizations, and academia.

The PharmD/MBA degree program offered between the South Carolina College of Pharmacy (SCCP) and The Moore School of Business at the University of South Carolina allows students to concurrently achieve both degrees. Pharmacy students will be able to enroll in the Professional Masters in Business (PMBA) program at the Moore School, which will provide flexibility in the course scheduling as this program offers evening classes, recorded lectures, and multiple distance education viewing sites across South Carolina and beyond.
Admission Requirements and Prerequisites
SCCP students interested in the concurrent degree program must formally apply to The Moore School of Business. Students will complete the application and will be required to take the GMAT or GRE to be considered for admission into the program.
Although the MBA program has traditionally required a bachelor’s degree, the Moore School has agreed to accept PharmD students who have completed the Pre-pharmacy curriculum and the first two professional years of the PharmD program. Students will be eligible to begin the PMBA program in the Fall of their 3rd professional year of the PharmD program. The PMBA program also offers Spring semester entry as well. This will allow PharmD students the option to begin the program at various times during the 3rd or 4th professional year of the PharmD program. Students will apply during the semester prior to the anticipated start date.
Curriculum and Course Transfers
The Moore School PMBA program is a year round program that is offered over four terms – two 12-week Spring terms, one 6-week Summer term, and one 12-week Fall term. For more information about the course sequence options, please click here.
The PMBA curriculum consists of 10 core courses and 6 elective courses. For more details, please click here.
Through the concurrent degree program, select SCCP courses can be used to satisfy up to 9 credit hours of PMBA elective requirements. The following SCCP courses have currently been approved for PMBA elective credit:
- SCCP 762 – Creating Pharmacy Leaders (2 credit hours)
- SCCP 774 – Pharmacy Political Advocacy (2 credit hours)
- SCCP 776 – Developing Medication Therapy Management Services (2 credit hours)
- SCCP 850 – Health Care Systems Management (4 credit hours)
- SCCP 857 – Community Pharmacy Practice & Operations (2 credit hours)
- SCCP 909 – Administrative Pharmacy Practice Experience (4 credit hours)
- SCCP 932 – Administrative Pharmacy Practice Experience II (4 credit hours)
Additionally, any PMBA courses offered through the Moore School can be used to satisfy SCCP PharmD elective requirements (up to 8 credit hours).
Additional information about the PMBA program can be obtained by contacting Dr. Bryan Ziegler (zieglerb@sccp.sc.edu or 803.777.4151) or go to http://mooreschool.sc.edu/pmba.aspx.
The joint degree program between the South Carolina College of Pharmacy and The Citadel allows students to achieve both degrees in the same four-year period, though there is substantial flexibility for students interested in taking additional courses. Students will take MBA courses during their second and third summers and no more than one MBA course each semester during their second and third years. All of The Citadel's courses are offered in the evening.
As constructed, this joint degree program conveys a significant savings of 26 credit hours over those required of students who might pursue both degrees concurrently outside of this program.
Admission Requirements and Prerequisites
SCCP students interested in the joint degree program must formally apply to The Citadel, and they will be required to take the GMAT for admission into The Citadel’s program before beginning classes there.
Although the MBA program has traditionally required a bachelor’s degree, they have agreed to accept PharmD students who have completed a total of 124 credit hours. Students can apply during the semester they are finishing up their 124 hours.
Curriculum and Course Transfers
The joint degree program will neither displace nor rearrange any of the core Pharm.D. courses. - Leadership in Organizations (BADM 722 - required)
- Global Business Strategy (BADM 740 - required)

The following Pharm.D. core courses will be accepted in place of the relevant MBA courses:
