Research & Graduate Programs

picAs a part of the University of South Carolina, the Medical University of South Carolina, Health Sciences South Carolina and other entities throughout the state and nation, the South Carolina College of Pharmacy offers is a leader in a variety of research areas and provides outstanding graduate studies.

Research

Research funding at the South Carolina College of Pharmacy has increased from less than $100,000 per year to $5 million per year in six years. This level of research funding now places the SCCP in the top 20 colleges of pharmacy in the country.

Faculty members in the Department of Clinical Pharmacy and Outcome Sciences are engaged in various areas of basic and translational scholarship which extend knowledge in and impact clinical therapeutics, professional practice, and pharmacy education. Our efforts in this area are often interdisciplinary in nature.

Research efforts in Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Sciences are focused in four areas: Chemical Biology/Medicinal Chemistry, Cancer Prevention and Treatment, Mitochondrial Biology, and Cell Death, Injury and Regeneration. Departmental research interfaces with research foci of the Medical University and University of South Carolina, including Structural Biology, Lipidomics, Neuroscience, Cardiovascular Pathophysiology, Oncology, and Nanobiotechnology.

Graduate Program

The SCCP faculty work with students who are seeking Ph.D., masters and joint Pharm.D./Ph.D. degrees. The South Carolina College of Pharmacy offers coursework and studies to students seeking a Ph.D. degree that is jointly administered by the University of South Carolina (USC) and the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC).

The graduate degree programs are structured to accommodate diverse research interests. Graduate students learn how to think critically and perform research.

Students in the joint PharmD/Ph.D. program meet Ph.D. course requirements through their successful completion of the PharmD curriculum, upon which they begin the intensive research to earn the Ph.D. Students who already have the PharmD and want to enroll in the Ph.D. program do so through the USC Graduate School or the MUSC College of Graduate Studies.
