Graduate Program

The South Carolina College of Pharmacy is an association of the Colleges of Pharmacy of the University of South Carolina and the Medical University of South Carolina. The jointly administered graduate program offers M.S. and Ph.D. degrees inPharmaceutical Sciences. Research training in the Department of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Sciences encompasses the understanding of disease
mechanisms and drug toxicity, and the design and development of pharmaceutical and anti-cancer agents.  Graduate students trained in Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Sciences bring the fundamentals of the physical and biological sciences to health-related research, and can pursue various exciting career options in academia, pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, or government agencies upon completion of their degree.

Research efforts in the Department of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Sciences have several foci:

  1. Bioorganic/Medicinal Chemistry
  2. Pharmaceutics and Pharmacology
  3. Cell Death, Injury, and Regeneration
  4. Cancer Etiology and Therapeutics

Specific areas of research in Bioorganic/Medicinal Chemistry include identification of new drug targets; rational and computer-aided drug design, synthesis and analysis; drug metabolism; and bioorganic and molecular immunology.  Research areas in Pharmaceutics and Pharmacology include microscale and nanoscale drug delivery systems, and ion channel physiology and pharmacology.  Research programs in Cell Death, Injury, and Regeneration include mechanisms of drug- and disease-induced cell injury, death and regeneration; molecular and cellular toxicology; drug transport; and acute heart, kidney, liver failure and stroke.  Research programs in Cancer Etiology and Therapeutics include mechanisms of cancer chemoprevention; inflammation; genome instability and DNA repair; and cancer therapeutic mechanism of action.

The graduate degree programs are structured to accommodate diverse research interests.  Graduate students learn how to critically think and perform research.  The faculty sincerely hopes that the pursuit of your advanced degree will be productive, rewarding, and enjoyable.  For additional specific information on the research areas, please explore the following links:
